NEW DELHI: The Lok Sabha has passed the Railways (Amendment) Bill 2024 aimed at improving the functioning of the Railway Board. The bill was passed by voice vote after long discussions. While passing the bill, Railway Minister Ashwani Vaishnav clarified that railway privatization is not on the agenda of the central government.
The Railway Minister rejected the claims that the amendment would lead to the privatization of railways. The minister criticized the opposition for spreading false news on the issue. Ashwini Vaishnav appealed to the opposition not to mislead the public and pointed out that there is a need to come together to improve the railway sector.
“A few members have said the Bill will lead to privatisation of railways, an attempt has been made to set a fake narrative. I want to appeal to them with all sincerity not to do this, their one fake narrative about the Constitution has already failed,” Vaishnaw said.
"Our objective is to modernize and strengthen the railways and not to privatize them. There will be no compromise on railway safety. The safety of track, train and level crossing will be enhanced. The old tracks are getting the benefit of being renovated on a wartime basis. New technology is being used to understand the problems on the tracks' - the minister clarified.
