WORLD SENTOSA (SINGAPORE): India's D Gukesh has won the FIDE World Chess Championship. He won the title by defeating China's chess grandmaster Ding Liren in the 14th round. The player's achievement is by acquiring seven and a half points. Gukesh surpassed chess legend Garry Kasparov's world title which he got at the age of 22 (1985).
The chess player is only 18 years old. Gukesh is the youngest world champion now. He is the first Indian to become the World Chess Champion after Viswanathan Anand. The Indian player has defeated the current world champion.
Gukesh's stunning victory came at a moment when it seemed that the 14th round will also be a tie. The Indian player took full advantage of the mistake made by Liren, the current champion.
While Ding Liren won the first round, Gukesh fought back by winning the third round. Seven consecutive draws followed. The win in the eleventh round was crucial for Gukesh in winning the title. Liren conceded defeat after 29 moves.
A mistake made by Liran under time pressure is what led to Gukesh's victory. The 14-game World Chess Championship is won by the first to score 7.5 points.
