NEW DELHI: The central government has formed a new monitoring committee to consider things related to the Mullaperiyar dam. The chairman of the National Dam Safety Authority has also been appointed as the chairman of the panel. The new committee was formed after the existing Mullaperiyar Monitoring Committee was dissolved.
The monitoring committee will have seven members. Additional Chief Secretaries from Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the chairman of the Cauvery Cell of Tamil Nadu and the chairman of the Irrigation Department of Kerala will be members of the committee. Earlier, the chairman of the Water Commission was the chairman of the monitoring committee. However, this was changed and the chairman of the National Dam Safety Authority was appointed as the chairman.
Matters related to the safety of the dam have been handed over to the National Dam Safety Authority to examine. The Central Water Commission had earlier informed the Supreme Court that the matter would be handed over to the Dam Safety Authority. The government action is following that.
