CHENNAI: A BJP leader in Tamil Nadu has come out in support of IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti's comments about Gomutra. Senior BJP leader and former state president of the party, Tamilisai Soundararajan, came in support of Kamakoti. 'A section of people say it is their right to eat beef. Why does another sect comment on the use of cow's urine to cure disease?' she asks. She opined that criticism of Kamakoti's comment was unnecessary.

Kamakoti had replied to the criticism that he eats Panchagavya which is made with cow urine, cow dung, milk, curd and ghee and is ready for debate if needed. Kamakoti spoke about the benefits of cow urine at the Go Samrakshana Sala (cow protection centre) event in Chennai on January 15.

Kamkoti revealed an anecdote from his life when he was advised by a monk to practice drinking cow urine. The IIT director said his father was miraculously saved from a serious fever after taking sips of cow urine. After the video went viral, there was a lot of criticism against him. Professor Kamakoti told mediapersons that there are at least five scientific papers vouching for the anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of cow urine. He also stated that a review on cow urine has been published in the Asian Journal of Pharmaceutical Research in April-June 2020.
