THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: No celebrations will be allowed in schools after the final SSLC and Plus Two exams, as per a decision by the Department of Public Education. This measure was prompted by troubling incidents, including the use of ganja during a 10th-grade send-off ceremony in Kasaragod and the tragic death of a student in a clash in Thamarassery. The decision was finalised during a meeting chaired by S. Shanavas, the Director of Public Education.
Schools have been instructed to ensure that students leave the school immediately after the exams and refrain from any farewell festivities. Traditionally, these events often involve celebrations similar to Holi and performances like chenda melams, which have previously escalated into conflicts. Parents have also been urged to ensure their children return home at the usual time to prevent any undesirable incidents.
Further concerns include reports of students consuming alcohol, smoking, and using banned tobacco products in school toilets. As a precaution, entry to school premises will be restricted after exams, and students will not be allowed to stay on school following the conclusion of their exams. S. Shanavas emphasised the importance of strict enforcement of these measures to uphold discipline and safety.
