THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The BJP plans to use the recent Waqf Act amendment as a strategic tool in Kerala politics. The party aims to capitalise on its role in protecting 600 Munambam residents from eviction during upcoming local body elections. Recent remarks by SNDP Yogam leader Vellappally Natesan in Malappuram have boosted BJP’s confidence.

The BJP has more than 1400 members in 21,865 wards out of 1200 local bodies in the state. It controls 22 local bodies, including Palakkad and Pandalam municipalities, and is the main opposition in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. In Lok Sabha elections, the BJP led in 11 assembly segments and secured second place in 18. The party has retained some Christian support after winning Thrissur.

The BJP hopes that resolving the Munambam issue will strengthen its credibility among Christians. With 90% of affected Munambam residents being Christian, the party accuses both the Left and UDF of favouring Muslims. It claims to have demonstrated fairness toward Christians and plans large rallies featuring Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. The BJP will engage Christian leaders and rely on figures like P.C. George, Shaun George, Anil Antony, and George Kurien to build support.
