NEW DELHI: Pakistani origin accused Tahawwur Rana, accused in Mumbai terror attack case, has been brought to India on a special flight. He will soon be taken to the NIA headquarters.
He will be produced in court online as there are security concerns in bringing him directly. Heavy security has been put in place in Delhi in connection with Rana's bringing.
Twelve officials, including the NIA Director General, will question him. The Pakistani foreign ministry spokesperson avoided media questions about Rana. He responded that Rana is a Canadian citizen.
Tahawwur Rana (64) is an associate of Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, the main mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks that killed 166 people on November 26, 2008. He was born in Pakistan's Punjab province. He worked in the Pakistan Army Medical Corps.
He has been in Canada since 1997 for business purposes. His acquaintance with Headley brought him closer to the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Pakistani spy agency ISI. According to the NIA charge sheet, Headley, Rana, and Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Zakiur Rehman planned the Mumbai terror attacks.
The charge sheet said Rana visited the locations where the attacks were to be carried out and provided financial and travel facilities to the terrorists. The US investigation agency FBI arrested Headley and Rana in October 2009.
