NEW DELHI: The counting of votes is in progress in four other legislative assemblies in the country, in addition to Nilambur. The counting is taking place in two constituencies in Gujarat, and one each in Punjab and West Bengal. In Punjab, the Ludhiana West constituency is witnessing a prestige battle between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The by-election in the constituency was necessitated by the death of an AAP MLA.
In Kaliganj constituency in West Bengal, the by-election was called following the death of a Trinamool MLA. The contest there was a triangular one between the Trinamool Congress, the BJP and Congress. In Kaliganj, the Left extended its support to the Congress. Of the two seats in Gujarat where the counting is in progress, one was previously held by the BJP and the other by the AAP.
As the initial vote-counting trends from the Nilambur by-election emerge, UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath is in the lead. The first votes counted were from the Vazhikkadavu panchayat. At present, Aryadan Shoukath is leading by 7214 votes.
