MOSCOW: Three earthquakes have struck eastern Russia. The US Geological Survey said the tremors measured 7.4, 6.7 and 5 on the Richter scale. A tsunami warning has been issued for the Pacific coast following the tremors. No casualties have been reported so far. Three strong earthquakes struck the seabed about 140 km east of the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka coast in 32 minutes. Authorities said there was currently no tsunami threat to Hawaii.
The first of the earthquakes felt off the coast of Kamchatka was registered at a magnitude of 5.0. Aftershocks were felt in the same area within 30 minutes. The second was registered at a magnitude of 6.7 and the third at a magnitude of 7.4. The US Geological Survey warned that dangerous tsunami waves were possible within a radius of 300 km from the epicenter in the Pacific, due to the strong undersea earthquake. It was the 7.4 magnitude earthquake at 0849 GMT that prompted the USGS to warn that “hazardous tsunami waves are possible" within 300 kilometres (186 miles) of the epicentre in the Pacific.
