Red alert issued in three districts including Ernakulam; heavy rains expected in Kerala at night; warning issued

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department has announced that there is a possibility of very heavy rain in Kerala. A red alert has been issued in three districts today. The red alert is in Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. The possibility of very heavy rain has been predicted. IMD defines extremely heavy rainfall as rainfall of more than 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

An orange alert is in place today in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The possibility of very heavy rain has been predicted in isolated places. IMD defines very heavy rainfall as rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

IMD has declared a yellow alert in the mentioned districts. The possibility of isolated heavy rain is predicted. Heavy rain is defined as a situation where rain falls from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Extremely intense rain can cause accidents. The trend of heavy rain in a short time is expected. It may cause landslides and flash floods. There is a possibility of waterlogging in urban areas and low-lying areas in general. Continued rainfall may cause landslides and rockfalls. The public and government agencies should be extremely cautious.

Special instructions for the public

• Those living in areas prone to landslides, flashfloods and torrents in the hilly areas receiving heavy rainfall should move to safer places. People should be ready to move during the day.
• Those living in low-lying areas where waterlogging is common should move to camps prepared after assessing the situation.
• Those living in unsecured houses and those living in houses with weak roofs should be especially cautious as there is a possibility of strong winds. Those who foresee a dangerous situation should contact the authorities and move to safer places as a safety precaution.
• Trees/posts/boards, walls, etc. that are in danger in private and public places should be secured and trees should be trimmed. The dangerous conditions should be brought to the attention of the authorities.
• Under no circumstances should rivers be crossed, rivers or other water bodies be used for bathing, fishing or other purposes during heavy rainfall.
• Avoid unnecessary travel as much as possible during heavy rainfall. Recreational trips to waterfalls, water bodies, and hilly areas should be avoided until the rain warning is lifted.
• Exercise special caution when traveling on roads adjacent to water bodies. Also exercise caution on roads under repair. The possibility of increased road accidents should be anticipated in the event of heavy rain.
