KOCHI: A controversial painting displayed at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale has been removed following protests by Christian groups. The artwork, which resembled Jesus Christ’s Last Supper, was part of an exhibition titled “Idam” and was created by Malayali artist Tom Vattakuzhi. Various Christian groups had alleged that the painting hurt the religious sentiments of Christians and insulted the traditional depiction of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. The authorities clarified that the painting was removed as per the decision of the Biennale curator.

Following the protests, one venue of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale was temporarily closed. The Kerala Latin Catholic Association also demanded that the painting be removed and sought an apology. In a Facebook post, association secretary Biju Josy Karumanchery questioned the use of public funds for what he called an insult to Christian beliefs. 'Don't think freedom of expression can be used as a reason to display anything using government money. Are you insulting us using the tax money that we pay?' he wrote. He also criticised the artwork for reinterpreting the world-famous mural painted by Leonardo da Vinci.

Meanwhile, artist Tom Vattakuzhi responded that artworks are created based on individual perspectives. He clarified that he did not intend to disrespect the Last Supper and said the painting was based on a theatrical work, not meant to insult Christian faith.
