CHENNAI: A further investigation has been launched into the arrest of eight people, including Malayali actress Anju Krishna, for trying to smuggle drugs. The anti-narcotics intelligence unit arrested the actress and a group with methamphetamine, ganja and stamps during a raid at Valasaravakkam in Chennai. The incident happened last night. Vincy Nivetha, an associate director in Tamil films, is also among the arrested.
The investigation into the drug gangs linked to the film industry was initiated by the arrest of Nesapakkam native Vigneshwaran with drugs. During interrogation, Vigneswaran had stated that he bought drugs from Venkatesh Kumar near Porur. With this, the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit contacted Venkatesh in Mufti. Venkatesh and his team then reached near Valasaravakkam to provide drugs. The investigation team then arrested the accused.
Karthik Raja, Yashwanth, Sriram, Kovilambakkam Alvi Binsha, Vincy Nivetha and Anju Krishna were in the car. They were produced in the court and remanded. Six grams of methamphetamine, 15 grams of hybrid cannabis, a smoking bong, a stamp and nine mobile phones have been seized from the accused. The police believe that if further investigation is conducted focusing on the seized phones, the big sharks in the drug network can be caught.
Anju Krishna started her career through modeling. She has acted in the Tamil film Vellimalai and the Malayalam film Aaro starring Joju George. She has also acted in the popular serial 'Priyankari'.
All were produced before a magistrate court and sent to judicial custody. They will stay in custody while the police continue their investigation.
