THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If someone calls the police emergency number 112, the police must reach the location quickly and provide the required service. The action taken at the scene must also be reported to the police headquarters. Officials from the headquarters will later call the complainant to confirm whether the response was proper and whether the service was provided. Therefore, any action taken after K B Ganesh Kumar’s wife Bindu Menon called 112 must be officially recorded.
Even phones without outgoing call facilities or those that are temporarily inactive can dial 112 to access emergency services such as police, fire force, and ambulance. Calls can also be made using the SOS button on the POL‑App. Using location-based services and the Emergency Location Service system, police can identify the caller’s location in real time and reach the spot quickly. All police vehicles are equipped with tablet computers, mobile phones, and GPS systems.
When someone calls 112 from anywhere in Kerala, the call is received at the centralised control room at the police headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram. Officers there quickly collect the details and send the message to the nearest police vehicle to the incident location. Using GPS, the control room can track where each police vehicle is. The message is sent directly to the tablet installed in the vehicle. Similar alerts are also sent to district control rooms. The official response time of the police is three minutes.
Action for misuse
Strict action will be taken against those who misuse the 112 emergency service. Authorities say that many calls received on the number are unnecessary or inappropriate. Such misuse can delay or even prevent help from reaching people who genuinely need emergency assistance.
