NEW DELHI: IndiGo, India’s largest airline, announced on Tuesday that Chief Executive Officer Pieter Elbers has resigned from his position, effective immediately. Following his departure, Managing Director and co-founder Rahul Bhatia has assumed interim charge of the airline’s management to oversee its operations.
The resignation comes in the wake of intense scrutiny following the airline's worst-ever operational crisis in December 2025. Between December 3 and December 5, 2025, the carrier cancelled over 2,500 flights and delayed nearly 1,900 more, severely disrupting travel for hundreds of thousands of passengers during the peak holiday season.
A high-level investigation committee appointed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) concluded that the collapse was primarily the result of internal management failures. The findings highlighted that the crisis was caused by an over-optimisation of operations that left minimal recovery buffers for unforeseen events. Furthermore, the committee pointed to insufficient regulatory preparedness and a failure to properly implement new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms, which led to significant crew shortages. These operational gaps were compounded by weaknesses in system software support and shortcomings in management structure that left the airline unable to maintain control during the disruption.
The fallout from the crisis was both immediate and significant. The DGCA imposed a total fine of ₹22.2 crore on the company for failing to adhere to mandatory safety and duty regulations. In addition to the regulatory penalties, internal estimates suggest the total financial impact of the three-day disruption, including passenger facilitation, refunds, and operational losses, reached approximately ₹2,000 crore.
Pieter Elbers, who took the helm as CEO in September 2022 after a successful career as the CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, had previously overseen a period of significant growth and fleet expansion. Despite those achievements, his leadership faced unprecedented pressure following the December meltdown. In his resignation letter, Elbers cited personal reasons for his decision to step down, though the timing underscores the lasting impact of the operational failures on his tenure. As IndiGo enters this leadership transition, Rahul Bhatia has signaled a renewed focus on reinforcing the company's operational excellence and restoring stakeholder trust.
