Flaming hay lorry paralyses National Highway; driver’s nerve averts catastrophe

CHALAKKUDY: A routine haul turned into a high-stakes race against time yesterday as a lorry loaded with hay transformed into a moving fireball on the National Highway, paralyzing traffic and pushing the nerves of local residents to the limit. In what many are calling a miraculous escape, the driver managed to navigate the flaming vehicle through crowded stretches of the Thrissur-Ernakulam route, narrowly averting a major catastrophe before fire crews could battle the blaze to a standstill.

The alarm was raised around 3:30 PM near Muringur, just as the lorry was approaching the Chalakkudy River. The driver, who had recently unloaded a portion of his cargo at Mala, realised with horror that the massive stacks of straw behind him had ignited. Fed by a punishing afternoon sun and high winds, the hay didn't just smolder—it erupted. Recognising the immediate danger of stopping in a congested area, the driver made the harrowing decision to keep the "fire-chariot" moving toward a safer, more open location.

Witnesses watched in shock as the burning lorry thundered across the Chalakkudy Bridge, trailing thick plumes of smoke across the water. The vehicle continued its desperate transit over the South Junction flyover, staying clear of trapped motorists, before finally veering onto the service road heading toward Ernakulam. The driver eventually brought the truck to a halt where the risk to nearby buildings and other vehicles was minimised.

Local residents were the first to alert the authorities, prompting a massive mobilisation of emergency services. The Chalakkudy Fire Brigade was quickly joined by units from Angamaly and Puthukkad as they fought to douse the tinder-dry straw, which proved incredibly volatile under the intense heat. It took an hour and a half of coordinated effort and the assistance of police officers from Koratty and Chalakkudy to finally declare the area safe. While the Thrissur-Ernakulam highway faced a total standstill during the operation, the outcome was a triumph of quick thinking; despite the dramatic scene, no injuries were reported.
