K-FON begin procedures to provide free internet services

internet-

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K-FON, the Kerala govt's pride project, has begun procedures to provide connections under the free internet scheme. For this, IT Infrastructure Ltd. has invited suggestions from Internet service providers. Then the tender process will proceed. Instructions should be given on how to bring internet service to the homes of the financially backward. Service providers are determined on a district basis.

Free internet connection up to 15 MB per second will be provided to 500 selected persons in each constituency. They will get free data of 1.5 GB a day.

Internet service will soon be available to others for free. It is hoped that the service charges will come down as the network is provided by the government.

The backbone of the K-FON is the huge cable network that runs through all the electric posts in the state. Out of 2,600 km, 2,045 km of cable laying has been completed. All government institutions will be connected through the Internet. With the completion of the project, e-governance, online utilization of government services and cashless transactions will be expedited.
