Commonwealth games to begin in England; Chess Olympiad in Chennai

Two mega sporting events will start today in India and England. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Chess Olympiad in Chennai. This is the first time in history that India will be hosting the Chess olympiad. At the same time, Birmingham in England will host the 22nd Commonwealth Games.

189 teams are participating in the open section of the Chess Olympiad. In the open section, Malayali grandmaster SL Narayanan is a member of India's A team and Nihal Sarin is a member of the B team. The chess olympiad will conclude on August 9.

Meanwhile, 72 countries, including India, will participate in the Commonwealth Games. The opening ceremony will be held from 8 pm Indian time. India is fielding a 201-member team in the Games. Badminton player PV Sindhu will be India's flag bearer.
