Costume designer found hanging, film fraternity shocked

CHENNAI: The police have started an investigation into the death of Thoorigai, a 29-year-old woman and daughter of Tamil lyricist Kabilan. She was costume designer and a writer. It is believed that she took the extreme step after her parents forced her to marry. She was found hanging in the bedroom of her house at MMDA Colony in Arumbakkam, Chennai. She was rushed to the hospital but her life could not be saved. The police are mainly investigating whether there is any other reason for the suicide. She had worked as a costume designer in many films and is a fashion consultant for many young actors. The Tamil film world is in shock over her death.

She had earlier posted on Instagram against girls committing suicide. She had mentioned in the post that girls should always stay strong. Actress Saranya expressed her shock by sharing the post of Thoorigai against suicide. Saranya penned that Thoorigai was a brave girl and she took the drastic step after not getting love from her dear ones.

Thoorigai had started an online magazine for women in 2020. Thurige was in the process of organizing an award show called 'Friendship Icon Awards' at the IIT Chennai campus as part of the two-year anniversary of the magazine. It was during this time she took the drastic step.
