NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal has resigned as the Chief Minister of Delhi. He went to Raj Bhavan and submitted his resignation to the Lieutenant Governor. He left without responding to the media. On Sunday, Kejriwal had announced that he would resign from the post of Delhi Chief Minister within two days. The question that arises across the country is why Arvind Kejriwal who did not resign even when he was in jail in the liquor policy scam case has made such an announcement after getting bail.
Saying that he wants to convince only the people that he is honest, Kejriwal also announced the resignation of Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, another accused in the liquor case. Kejriwal had earlier said that they would return to their respective positions after the people gave a verdict that they were honest.
Atishi Marlena will succeed Arvind Kejriwal. The final announcement was made after the legislature party meeting held today. Atishi will be the third woman chief minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. Apart from Arvind Kejriwal, senior leader Manish Sisodia and other leaders supported Atishi.
Atishi joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2013 and was also involved in the party's policy-making. Atishi became more prominent when she became an advisor to Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who held the education portfolio when the Aam Aadmi Party came to power in Delhi in 2015.
It was Atishi who played a major role in the overall progress and improvement made in Delhi's education sector under the Aam Aadmi Party government. School management committees were formed based on the Right to Education Act. Infrastructure in government schools were developed. Steps were taken to improve the quality of teachers. Entrepreneurship Curriculum and Happiness Curriculum were launched. Topics for inculcating an entrepreneurial spirit and developing the mindset to live happily were included in the curriculum. It was also a significant move to tighten the law to prevent private schools from increasing fees at will. In 2018, she announced that she gave up her family name Marlena and changed her name to Atishi.
