Rishi Sunak to become Britain’s first Indian-origin Prime Minister

LONDON: It has been confirmed that Indian-origin Rishi Sunak will be the next Prime Minister of United Kingdom. His challenger Conservative party leader Penny Mordaunt dropped out of contest on Monday which paved way for 42-year-old Rishi Sunak to become the next PM.

Rishi Sunak will also become the first Asian to become the British Prime Minister. Penny Mordaunt announced his withdrawal from the contest on Twitter. Sunak is the third person to become the Prime Minister of Britain in seven months. Liz Truss, who took office after the resignation of Boris Johnson, also resigned the other day. Liz Truss resigned as she faced severe criticism on account of economic policies.

146 MPs including Home Secretary Grant Shapps, former Home Secretary and Indian-origin Suella Braverman, Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch, North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay, former Health Secretary Sajid Javid and many others came out in support of Rishi.
