Kerala’s first Mother Newborn care unit to start functioning from New Year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For the first time in the state, a Mother Newborn Care Unit (MNCU) has been set up at Institute of Maternal and Child Health in Kozhikode Medical College. Health Minister Veena George will inaugurate this at 1.30 pm on January 2.

Minister Veena George said that this initiative will become a milestone in the field of newborn health care. “MNCU is a treatment program that ensures the presence of mothers in the care of babies. It is an innovative concept that is being recognized globally.”, she said.

This facility is available in a few centres in India. The MNCU has 8 beds with modern facilities.

Special intensive care for newborns from birth to 28 days will be available here. Intensive care including ventilator for premature babies and for babies having low weight at birth is available here. Treatment for infants requiring complex surgery is also available with the support of the Pediatric Surgery Department.
