THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Swayamvarm’ — the magnum opus of legendary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan is celebrating its 50 years of release. Unquestionably, a proud moment for movie lovers and many with a special like for vintage classics. But times are not good it seems, as anything and everything that links with the name Adoor gets into a quagmire. The government has asked the local panchayats to raise at least Rs 5000 for celebrating the movie. This move called for criticism after many contrarian voices started asking about the need for public funding for celebrating this event. Now, backing the move, Minister MB Rajesh said that such incidence of public funding are common in Kerala and he admonished people trying to detect fault with every move of the government.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan was mired in controversy surrounding the KR Narayanan institute in recent times. The issue reached a truce just days back after many pacifying acts from the government. The current issue over public funding got its worse shape only for the name of the director involved.
