ROME: Around thirty people were injured in a massive explosion at a petrol station in Rome. Among the injured, nine are law enforcement officers and the rest are civilians, according to reports. One person is in critical condition, said Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.
The explosion occurred at around 8:20 AM local time. Following the incident, nearby buildings were evacuated. Significant damage was reported, including to a children’s summer camp facility located in a sports hall, Mayor Gualtieri stated.
It is believed that a gas leak occurred while refuelling, which then led to the fire. Emergency services were already present at the scene when the incident happened, which helped prevent more serious damage. Videos circulating on social media show a large fireball rising into the sky, followed by thick black smoke spreading across the area.
