RIYADH: Along with mega construction projects aimed at Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has also prepared the ground for a major leap in the defence sector. A new airbase has been opened in the central sector of the capital, Riyadh. The facility has been named the King Salman Air Base. Located southwest of Riyadh, the airbase is expected to play a crucial role in the country’s defence. The airbase will be key to ensuring protection from cross-border drones and missiles. It will also strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to patrol the Gulf region and enhance aerial surveillance over the Red Sea.
The King Salman Air Base was constructed over 38 months and covers an area of 1,26,000 square metres. Through this project, Saudi Arabia aims to bring major changes to its air force and military capabilities. The base is equipped with next-generation fighter aircraft, advanced aeronautical technology, and modern training facilities.
In the context of recent developments in neighbouring countries, Saudi Arabia’s move to strengthen its defence capacity has drawn attention. The kingdom already has one of the strongest air forces in the Arab region. Saudi Arabia ranks 11th globally in overall defence capability. The Saudi Air Force includes more than 30,000 personnel and over 1,000 aircraft.
Saudi Arabia is also among the countries that spend the most on defence worldwide. As part of Vision 2030, the kingdom is making large investments in the defence sector. The defence budget for this year stands at $78 billion, making it the fifth largest in the world and the largest in the Arab world. Defence spending accounts for 7.1 per cent of Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product (GDP).
After the United States, Saudi Arabia has the largest fleet of F-15 fighter jets. Aircraft such as the F-15 and Eurofighter Typhoon form the backbone of the Saudi Air Force. Reports also suggest that Saudi Arabia may acquire advanced F-35 fighter jets through a new $42 billion defence deal with the United States. If this materialises, Saudi Arabia will become the second Gulf country after Israel to possess the F-35.
Given the vast geographical size of the country, a strong air force is essential for Saudi Arabia’s security. The kingdom currently operates seven major airbases under nine wings. The new airbase is expected to play a vital role in countering growing threats in the Red Sea region and in strengthening the military capability of the Arab world.
