BEIJING: Pakistan’s first Chinese-made submarine is expected to become operational next year. The news was confirmed by Pakistan Navy Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf in an interview with Chinese media. Analysts say the move aims to strengthen Pakistan’s defence against India and expand its presence in the Middle East. The deal is reportedly worth around $5 billion.

Admiral Ashraf said the plan to deliver eight Hangor-class submarines to Pakistan by 2028 is progressing smoothly. He added that the new submarines will enhance Pakistan’s patrol capabilities in the northern Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.

“Chinese platforms and equipment are reliable, technologically advanced, and well-suited for Pakistan Navy operations. As modern warfare evolves, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced electronic warfare technologies are becoming increasingly important. The Pakistan Navy is focusing on these areas and working to strengthen cooperation with China,” Admiral Ashraf said.

Under the terms of the agreement, the first four diesel-electric submarines will be built in China, while the remaining vessels will be assembled in Pakistan, officials said. Three submarines have already been delivered from a shipyard in Hubei province via the Yangtze River to Pakistan. Pakistan has long been China’s largest defence customer. According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), more than 60% of China’s arms exports between 2020 and 2024 were purchased by Pakistan.
