India loses 'Ratan'; Popular industrialist Ratan Tata passes away at 86

MUMBAI: Ratan Tata, the self-effacing business tycoon and chairman of Tata Sons breathed his last on Wednesday night at a private hospital in Mumbai. He was 86. Ratan Tata was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after experiencing a sudden drop in blood pressure levels.

On October 7th, Ratan Tata dismissed rumours of his ‘grave health concern’ on his social media page, saying he was stable and visited the hospital only as part of his routine checkup.

' Thank You for thinking of me, I am in good spirits. refrain from spreading misinformation." said Ratan Tata on Instagram.

Ratan Tata was a businessman honoured by the country with the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan.

He was the Chairman of the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012. Ratan Tata assumed charge as Chairman of Tata Sons in 1991. The turnover of the company skyrocketed from Rs 10,000 crore in 1991 to Rs 100.09 billion in 2011-12 which largely rests as a feather on Ratan Tata’s cap.

Ratan Tata's differences of opinion with Cyrus Mistry, who later became the chairman after his resignation, invited a big spotlight.

Mistry was removed from this position in October 2016. Later, Ratan Tata returned as the interim chairman and handed over the leadership of the company to N Chandrasekhar in January 2017. Cyrus Mistry eventually died in a brutal road accident in 2022.
