NEW DELHI: The Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) test- meant to enhance the safety of fighter pilots during aircraft accidents- has been successfully carried out. This technology enables pilots to eject from a failing aircraft in just a few seconds and land safely with the help of a parachute.
The test was conducted at DRDO’s Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the trial was successful, with the RTRS reaching a speed of 800 km per hour.
The rocket-sled test artificially recreated an aircraft’s aerodynamic conditions and speed in the sky. Based on the test results, India will be able to develop and install an indigenous safety system in fighter jets in the future.
