NEW DELHI: Microsoft will invest 17.5 billion US dollars (about 1.5 lakh crore Indian rupees) to develop artificial intelligence technology in India. The announcement was made by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is the largest investment Microsoft has made in Asia.

Nadella said the investment will be in developing digital infrastructure, cloud computing learning, skill development and AI-centric capabilities for India's AI needs. Nadella's visit is aimed at increasing Microsoft's presence in India and focusing on the cloud and AI markets. He will also visit Mumbai and Bengaluru during his four-day visit to Delhi.

Nadella had announced an investment of US$3 billion when he visited India in January. This is for AI infrastructure and expertise. The project aims to create 10 million AI professionals in India by 2030.

"The meeting with Satya Nadella was very positive. I am happy that Microsoft is making its largest investment in Asia in India. This opportunity will be a blessing for the youth of India.

-Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Educated youth in India are facing a shortage of job opportunities in the US due to the H1B visa crisis. Microsoft's AI project will provide jobs to about 2 lakh graduates in the IT sector in the country every year. AI research labs and data centres will expand further in the country.
