Nine feared dead, many injured in temple stampede in Andhra Pradesh; death toll likely to rise

AMARAVATI: Nine people died and many were injured in the stampede at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga town of Andhra Pradesh. The death toll is expected to rise. Rescue operations are underway.

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's Office said the accident was caused by a sudden swelling of devotees due to Ekadashi worship. Those injured in the stampede have been admitted to nearby hospitals. Agriculture Minister K. Atchannaidu visited the temple and assessed the situation. The minister said that additional police personnel have been deployed for rescue operations.

“The death of devotees is extremely heartbreaking. My condolences to the families of the deceased. Officials have been instructed to ensure proper treatment for the injured at the earliest. Local officials and public representatives have been requested to visit the spot and supervise the relief efforts,” responded Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
