Trapped parrot rescued in Thamarassery, Owner faces legal action

KOZHIKODE: The forest department has registered a case against a house owner in Thamarassery for illegally capturing a parrot using a trap and keeping it in a cage. The parrot was rescued from the house in Bharanipara, Narikkuni Panchayat, by a team led by Thamarassery Range Forest Officer Prem Shameer.

The officials took the following tip-off received by Officer Prem Shameer. Keeping birds like parrots in captivity can attract up to 7 years of imprisonment and a fine of at least Rs 25,000. The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 prohibits the possession, trade, and handling of wild animals and their parts without a license.

The forest officials, including Range Forest Officer Prem Shameer, Section Forest Officer K.K. Sajeev Kumar, Beat Forest Officers Nidhin K.S. and Neethu S. Thankachan, and driver Sathish Kumar, seized the parrot and the cage. The house owner will face charges under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
