
ALAPPUZHA: The highway contracting company has responded to the incident in which the driver of a pickup van died after a girder collapsed on the Aroor-Thuravoor elevated road construction area. Sibin, an employee of the contracting company, said the accident was not intentional and that the loss to the family is huge. The company has assured to resolve the issue as soon as possible and will pay Rs 25 lakh to the bank account of the dead Rajesh's wife. The money will be transferred as soon as the account details are received. It is not known what happened last night. Sibin said the work is being carried out while the road is normally closed.
Rajesh of Pallipad in Alappuzha died when a girder fell on top of his pickup van. The accident happened at Chandiroor at around 2:30 am. Two girders fell. The pickup van was crushed under it. The pickup van was carrying eggs from Tamil Nadu and the accident happened while coming to Alappuzha after unloading the load in Ernakulam. One girder fell completely and the other partially. The accident occurred while the girders were being installed.
The police have registered a case against the employees of the construction company in the incident. The case has been filed under non-bailable section. The FIR states that the contracting company has committed serious negligence. The case has been charged under Section 105 of the Indian Penal Code for culpable homicide. Since it is a non-bailable section, the accused will be remanded if arrested. The police can also take them into custody for interrogation.
