KANNUR: The anticipatory bail plea of Dr M K Ram, accused in the death of BDS student Nithin Raj of Anjarakandy Dental College, has been rejected. The verdict is that of Thalassery District Sessions Court-IV. Meantime, anticipatory bail has been granted to the second accused Dr Sangeetha Nambiar. The argument in the case was completed yesterday.
The family informed the court that Nithin had informed them before his death that the head of the department, Dr M K Ram, was mentally torturing him on the grounds of caste and colour. The family also alleged that there were disputes related to internal marks.
The defence argued that Nithin was in the principal's cabin from 1 pm to 1.10 pm on the day of the incident and that Dr Ram was not there at that time. The petitioners pointed that some other students had told media that the suicide was due to the threat of a loan app and that there was no caste discrimination.
Nithin's classmate had stated that she heard Dr Ram say, ‘that idiot jumped for sympathy'. The prosecution also pointed that Nithin had openly informed the issues with Ram before the principal.
Dr Ram belongs to the OBC category. Therefore, the SC/ST Act is not applicable, the defense argued. However, the prosecution said that the SC/ST status of the victim is more important than the caste of the person who committed the caste abuse.
