KOCHI: Internal tensions are simmering within the actors' association, AMMA, following the reinstatement of a terminated employee and the decision to send the Treasurer on mandatory leave. The situation escalated further with the resignation of Joint Secretary Ansiba Hassan, highlighting deep divisions within the governing body.

The issues became public after office manager Athulya Prakash filed a complaint with the current leadership, headed by President Shwetha Menon and General Secretary Kukku Parameswaran. Athulya alleged that Treasurer Unni Shivapal terminated her services without following legal procedures.

In a recent executive committee meeting, the association decided to reinstate the manager and asked Unni Shivapal to go on mandatory leave. However, members have noted that no action was taken against General Secretary Kukku Parameswaran, leading to further friction.

Ansiba Hassan, who was the only office bearer elected unopposed, stepped down citing professional and personal reasons. However, former Joint Secretary Baburaj publicly alleged that her resignation was triggered by internal harassment, including claims that the Treasurer had taken over her office space.

Baburaj also raised serious financial allegations, claiming that funds meant for the medical aid of ailing members and other welfare schemes are being stalled. He accused the leadership of wasting money on lavish parties and meetings at luxury hotels. Controversies surrounding expenses for the International Film Festival reception and a family meet in Kochi are also being debated among members.

"Slave-like" treatment
The letter sent by the office manager has caused significant embarrassment to the female-majority leadership. Her key allegations include:

  • Despite official hours being 9 AM to 6 AM, she was forced to work until midnight and even on holidays.
  • She alleged that the Treasurer constantly insulted her performance and kept her under extreme mental pressure.
  • She claimed she was frequently threatened with termination before eventually being fired.
