KOZHIKODE: The eyewitnesses are still in shock after a pregnant woman was burnt to death after a moving car caught fire at Kakkaramukku in Cheruvannur. Sona (27), wife of Rejin Lal of Kakkaramukku had died in the incident. Rejin Lal, who was driving the car, suffered serious burn injuries and is undergoing treatment at Government Medical College Kozhikode.

The accident happened around 9 pm last night while the couple was returning from the hospital in Kallode, Perambra. When flames and smoke began rising from the car, Rejin stopped the vehicle and jumped out, but fire quickly spread over his body. Sona, who was pregnant, was then lying on the back seat of the car. He then tried to rescue Sona, but the car door was reportedly locked. With flames engulfing him, Rejin jumped into a nearby canal.

Local residents rushed to the spot as soon as they noticed smoke and fire emanating from the vehicle. They tried to douse the flames by pouring water from a nearby paddy field. A fire force team from Perambra later arrived and took Sona out of the vehicle and rushed her to Perambra Taluk Hospital, but her life could not be saved.

Postmortem procedures are presently progressing. Sona was daughter of Srinivasan of Paleri Koyimpil and Vasantha. Sonu is her brother.
