KASARAGOD: Sindhu teacher is relieved to be back on her feet. Teacher still does not know how she escaped from the car that was stuck on the hill that fell onto the road with a loud bang. The hundred-meter-high Veeramalakkunnu in Mayicha, Cheruvathur, Kasaragod, fell onto the national highway at 10.10 am yesterday.
K Sindhu, who lives near Durga Higher Secondary School in Kanhangad, is a teacher at S.N. Teachers Training Institute, Padannakkad. She left Padannakkad in a Maruti Espresso car with registration number KL 60 S 6447 to visit Kodakkad School in the morning.
"When I reached Mayichal, I saw dirt falling on the road. I thought I could go faster, so I took the car forward. But the hill fell down at lightning speed and covered the car. The car moved to the right side of the highway but did not overturn. Then I turned off the car." "The locals who came running saved me." - Sindhu, who was still shaking and exhausted, told Kerala Kaumudi. The teacher was saved by the fact that the car's window did not break due to falling soil. District Collector K Inbasekar and M Rajagopalan MLA who reached the spot, consoled the teacher. The car was damaged. The scooter passenger who came after Sindhu barely escaped. Locals are worried that the hill will collapse again if no solution is found.
No water flow, disaster averted
Several vehicles, including cars, lorries and scooters, had passed this way just before the incident. It was fortunate that the water did not flow along with the collapsed hill. The mud did not spread to nearby houses, which was a relief. Although a search was conducted by removing the soil on suspicion that more vehicles were trapped, nothing was found. Traffic on the national highway was brought to a standstill following the accident.
