KANNUR: Thalassery Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany's remark that if the price of rubber is increased to Rs 300 help will be given to BJP in the elections, has led to a widespread discussion in the state. While BJP welcomed the statement, CPM and Congress criticized it. Now Bishop Mar Joseph Pamplany is giving more explanation in the statement.

Pamplany said that their ultimate goal is not political support, but the upliftment of farmers. The statement should not be interpreted as a declaration of the Catholic Church or a declaration of compromise with any political party. This is the general sentiment of farmers. On the basis that there was a need for a political solution to the neglect faced by the farmers, it was said that the vote would be given to those who considered the farmers. He added that it was the general decision of the farmers' organizations.

"We don't mean this as the beginning of an alliance with the BJP," he said, adding that whoever considers the demands of the farmers will be welcomed.
