'Diwali Day Act': Legislation introduced to make Diwali a holiday in USA

diwali-

NEW YORK: A prominent American lawmaker has introduced a bill in the U.S. Congress to declare Diwali a federal holiday. This comes after prolonged efforts from Indian expats and lawmakers.

The 'Diwali Day Act' would make it the 12th officially recognized holiday in the US. It is noteworthy that New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared Diwali a public school holiday last year.

"My Diwali Day Act is one step toward educating all Americans on the importance of this day, and celebrating the full face of American diversity," Grace Meng, a Democrat member of the House of Representative, said on Friday.

Along with Diwali, Lunar New Year is also likely to be a federal holiday. Action on the bills may take place by June 8 in the presence of Shekhar Krishnan, New York's first Indian-American councilman. Lunar New Year is an important day in China and East Asia.
