Heavy rain in Thiruvananthapuram; holiday declared for educational institutions; relief camps opened

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A holiday has been declared tomorrow (16-10-2023) for all educational institutions in Thiruvananthapuram district due to heavy rain. The holiday applies to professional colleges and Kendriya Vidyalayas. District Collector Geromic George announced the holiday as heavy rains continue in the district. Many places in Thiruvananthapuram city are still waterlogged due to heavy rain since Saturday night.

Meanwhile, 21 relief camps have been opened in Thiruvananthapuram district. 875 people have been shifted to various camps at present. In the district, six houses were completely destroyed and 11 houses were partially destroyed. Most camps were opened in Thiruvananthapuram taluk following heavy rains. There are 580 people in 16 camps. 249 people were relocated to four camps in Chirayinkeezhu taluk and 46 people to one camp in Varkala taluk.

There are three camps in Kadakampally village of Thiruvananthapuram taluk. 36 people were shifted to Vettukad St Mary's LPS, Karikakam Govt HS and Veli Youth Hostel. 13 men, 15 women and eight children have been shifted to Kedaram Line NSS Auditorium in Pattom village, 56 to a temporary camp in Thekkumoodu and 26 to Kunnukuzhi Government LPS. A camp has also been opened at Mekepattam Government LPS but people have not reached there yet.

10 people were shifted to Kattil LPS in Attipra village and 38 people were shifted to Poundukadavu Mosque. There are 40 people from 18 families at Poongkulam School in Kalliyur village and 40 people at Vellayani MNLPS. 6 people have been shifted to Pachallur Government LPS in Thiruvallam village. There are 46 people from 14 families in Alummoodu LPS in Pallipuram village. Among them are 25 men, 16 women and five children.

22 people, including 14 men, seven women and a child, were evacuated to the panchayat indoor stadium in Veiloor village. A camp has been opened at Eanchakkal Government UPS in Petta village but people have not reached there yet.

There are 15 people in the camp in four families at Mullassery LPS in Attingal village. Six men, seven women and two children. Puravoor SV UPS in Kizhuvilam village has 28 people from six families. Eight men, 14 women and six children. There are six people from two families in the camp at Patanilam LPS. Two men, three women and one child. 41 families were relocated to Sarkara UPS in Chirayinkeezhu village. There are 200 people including 60 men, 98 women and 42 children. 46 people in nine families have been relocated at Venkulam Government LPS in Edava village of Varkala taluk. There are 17 men, 18 women, nine children, one pregnant woman, and one-bed patient.
