NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court says conspiracy against Prime Minister is tantamount to treason. The court verbally observed that it is a very serious crime. Justice Jasmeet Singh observed that without proper evidence and reason, it cannot even be suggested that there was a conspiracy against the Prime Minister. The court held that conspiracy against the Prime Minister was an offence under the IPC and constituted treason.
The court was hearing a defamation case filed by lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, who alleged that Biju Janata Dal MP and senior lawyer Pinaki Mishra was involved in a conspiracy targeting the Prime Minister. Dehadrai's lawyer pointed out that the close relationship between Pinaki Mishra and Mahua Moitra was the basis for the allegations. The court asked Dehadrai's lawyer to prove the allegation of conspiracy against the Prime Minister, but he was unable to provide any evidence.
The court also intervened when Dehadrai's lawyer said that he had personally seen the conspiracy taking place. "What you say will have serious consequences and you are speaking about the highest office in the country," the court reminded.
Seeking compensation and an apology, Pinaki Mishra also requested the court to restrain Dehadrai from making defamatory statements and to remove such content from various platforms including news organizations.
