Avoid this QR code at any cost; Phishing attacks reported in Kerala

THRISSUR: Various deceiving gangs are experimenting with their luck in Kerala. The latest tactic used by these gangs is now being discussed for its novelty. Whatsapp messages or normal messages reach people saying money is being credited into their account. A link in the addendum of the message will have a QR code connected to it. With zero know-how of fraud, some people scan the QR code and end up losing a good chunk of their money. It is reported that hackers are extorting money including bank account information.

Caution should also be exercised in transactions involving OLX. Customers should check their profile photo, name, phone number, and date of joining. If someone has previously reported the account due to fraud, it can be found on OLX.

Then be careful while doing the transaction. Not all URLs and QR codes are valid. Some QR codes can lead to a phishing website for fraud. When opening a link using a QR code, make sure the URL is secure and comes from a trusted source.

1. Generate QR codes from known service providers only.

2. It is advisable to give permission to access websites with our knowledge.

3. Avoid downloading custom QR code apps.

Never download screen-sharing apps like AnyDesk and TeamViewer. Strangers can easily assert control over your phone through this app. Do not share UPI ID or bank account details with strangers. Do not forward OTP to anyone.
