THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Two electric double-decker buses are set to arrive in Thiruvananthapuram by December's end for KSRTC's budget tourism initiative. These buses, purchased from the Leyland company for 4 crores through the Central Government's Smart City scheme are currently undergoing body construction in Mumbai, which includes an open roof on the second floor.
This move will make Thiruvananthapuram the second city in South India to boast an electric double-decker bus. The service aims to cater to tourist attractions within the capital city. Additionally, provisions will be made available for organizing birthday parties onboard. Prior to this, Mumbai and Hyderabad have successfully run double-decker e-buses.
Under the Thiruvananthapuram Smart City scheme, a total of 113 electric buses are planned, with 50 expected to be completed by December's end. Consequently, the capital city will boast a fleet of 163 e-buses. The electric service priced at Rs 10 per city trip proves to be financially viable.
In contrast, Hyderabad operates six double-decker e-buses, purchased for Rs 12.96 crore by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Urban Development Authority. These buses serve popular destinations such as Birla Mandir, Assembly, Salar Jung Museum, Charminar and Makkah Masjid, with a fare of Rs 50 per person. Each bus accommodates 65 passengers along with the driver and can travel up to 150 km on a single charge, requiring 2-2.5 hours for a full recharge. Additionally, plans are underway to acquire an additional 23 buses in the near future.
