KOCHI: Police have taken a 'living together' couple into custody in connection with the incident where a one-month-old baby died of head injuries. The youth from Kannur and the woman hailing from Alappuzha are in the custody of the Elamakkara police. The two were questioned under the leadership of Central Assistant Police Commissioner Jayakumar.
The couple, living on rent in Karukapally in Ernakulam, reached the Ernakulam General Hospital with the unconscious one-month-old boy at around 8.30 am on Sunday. They told the hospital staff that the baby might've choked on breast milk and that they rushed the baby to the hospital after finding that the baby was not responding. Although the baby was admitted to the newborn ICU, his life could not be saved.
However, preliminary inspection revealed that the cause of death was a head injury. Subsequently, the police took the couple into custody. Both of them were in love and had been staying together in Kochi for one and a half years.
The baby's body is being kept at Ernakulam Govt Medical College Hospital for postmortem. The postmortem will be conducted in the presence of paediatricians as abnormal marks were spotted on the baby's body.
