THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An allegation has gained steam that WhatsApp is listening to its users and leaking the information even when the phone is not in use.
Even if the phone is left alone, the surrounding conversations are said to be recorded. Cyber experts say that the occasional flickering of the screen is the chat app eavesdropping on our speech through the microphone and through special sensors.
Some time ago, a UK engineer tweeted that WhatsApp leaked his data while he was sleeping. At that time, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also accused that WhatsApp is not safe.
Now the accusations are being made after WhatsApp did not provide the cyber police with the names of those who spread obscene videos against the housewife in Kilimanoor.
The police asked for the information of the person who first circulated the obscene videos, but WhatsApp did not provide it, saying it is a violation of privacy. The accusation against WhatsApp is that 'information can be leaked by them but the wrongdoer will not be exposed'. The police issued a notice as per the direction of the court. A contempt of court action has been taken against the WhatsApp representative in the country. WhatsApp collects our pictures and messages despite offering 100% privacy (end-to-end encryption). Through this we will understand our likes and dislikes. They can earn income by placing ads on social media that we enjoy.
WhatsApp-government War
In the IT Act, 2021, the Centre had asked WhatsApp to form an internal committee to prevent the leakage of personal information. The American company WhatsApp had complained in the Supreme Court that this Indian law should be amended. WhatsApp also does not comply with the 72-hour requirement to respond to requests for information to prevent cybercrimes.
Business of crores
Apart from WhatsApp, companies like Google and Facebook also fail to ensure privacy. Google and Facebook sell data of Indians to each other for crores.
