Meat cravings; 10,000 crore lives getting butchered

WASHINGTON: The total number of people in the world is 810 crores, but more than 10 billion animals are killed annually for meat.

The majority of victims of meat cravings are chickens. Humans ingest more than 25 crore chickens every day. The figures are from a study conducted by an organization in America. The study suggests that vegetarianism should be encouraged to follow a healthy lifestyle.

There are about 2300 million farmed animals in the world. Out of this chickens alone will be 1900 crores. The highest quantity of slaughter takes place in China (91.37 million tons) followed by the United States (42.57 million tons). India consumes 6.30 million tonnes (630 crore kg) of meat per month.

Chicken: 7500 crores

Shrimp: 300 crores

Duck: 300 crores

Goose: 210 crores

Pig: 150 crores

Goat: 50 crores

Cow: 30 crores

Dog: 2.5 crores

Cat: 1 crore
