Bad news to those gearing up to fly to Canada; this province puts two-year ban on new colleges from applying to enrol foreign students

canada

OTTAWA: The Canadian province of British Columbia has banned new colleges from applying to enrol foreign students for the next two years. The government of the Canadian province said that the ban will be in place till February 2026. The move comes in the wake of a massive increase in Indian students in universities such as Victoria, Simon Fraser etc and other institutions in the province.

With this, the Justin Trudeau government intends to reduce the admission of foreign students to Canada to 35 percent. Foreign media have already reported that Canada is mulling to raise the minimum qualification required for students seeking admission to educational institutions and candidates for various jobs in the country. Officials have stated that the new decision is aimed at reducing the exploitation faced by students coming to Canada and further improving the quality of education.

In 2023, the Canadian government had decided to admit 500,000 permanent residents and 900,000 international students to improve the country's economy. However, more foreigners than expected came to Canada for permanent residence and study, posing a serious challenge for the country.
