CHANDIGARH: In an unforeseen situation, Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit handed over his resignation letter to Indian president Droupadi Murmu. The letter cited personal reasons and other commitments for his sudden exit from office. With the resignation, Purohit will also step down from his role of administrator in the union territory of Chandigarh, which is the joint capital for both Punjab and Haryana.
Purohit’s resignation comes amidst an ongoing tussle with the state government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. There are still many controversial bills waiting for the governor’s signature and the dispute is also under the consideration of the Supreme Court. Formerly active in politics, Banwarilal Purohit has contested three times from Nagpur and reached Parliament.
Puroith took charge as Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator back on August 31, 2021.
