MALAPPURAM: A WhatsApp chat has turned crucial evidence in the case of a woman murdering her one-year-old baby in Shornur. The chat informs her live-in-partner about the murder of their baby.

‘Our daughter is dead; I killed my daughter. Aju, our daughter has gone,’ this is the message she sent to her partner. It is believed that she may have killed her daughter thinking that the baby would be a burden while she goes for work.

Shikanya, born to Ajmal of Vennakkara in Palakkad and Shilpa, was suffocated to death on Friday. They were living together for two years and were living separately for the past six months.

Shilpa confessed during interrogation that she suffocated the baby to death. The WhatsApp chat surfaced after this. She committed the crime in Mavelikkara. She later reached Shornur in a rented car to meet Ajmal with the child’s body.

Ajmal is a theatre employee and Shilpa, a therapist in a private firm. Her partner Ajmal told police that she takes drugs. She also tried to hand over the baby to him after they got estranged. There were regular fights over the baby. Shilpa reached the theater on Friday morning and demanded to lay the body to rest. The theater staff who saw this informed the police.
