THRISSUR: University of Agriculture possesses the largest genetic collection of seventy cocoa varieties ahead of Malaysia and Indonesia. There are cocoa varieties from 23 countries at the research centre at Vellanikkara. 15 high yielding cultivars adapted to the climate were also developed.
Agricultural university varieties are used in 90 percent of India's plantations. Technology, primary processing and chocolate production were also developed. Training is provided in production and technology of high yielding plants. Farmers can earn better income by inter-cropping.
The project started in 1970 with the help of the World Bank and since 1987 it has been carried out in collaboration with Cadbury (Mondelez). It is the only public private partnership project in India. Meanwhile, six resistant varieties have been released. Although demand for chocolate and cocoa products is increasing in India, production is only 30 percent. Eight African countries, including Ivory Coast and Ghana, produce 70 percent. Due to high heat and untimely rains, the production has decreased and the prices have also increased at present.
