13 months in Russia, later at ISRO’s special center, know how India prepared four to fight any situation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ISRO announced the team of Gaganyaan, India’s dream project, in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair, Group Captain Ajith Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Prathap and Wing Commander Shubhanshu Shukla are those selected for the Gaganyaan mission.
The Gaganyaan project was developed by ISRO in collaboration with Indian Air Force. Prashanth and three others are the four selected from among those who have primarily undergone clinical test, aero medical test and psychological test. The National Crew Selection Board recommended the names of the four.

The four were sent to Russia's Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center for training. The training in Russia was for 13 months. Various phases of the space mission were trained here. They got expert training in parabolic flight, survival training in off nominal snow and desert-water landing. The training in Russia was followed by rigorous training at ISRO's Human Space Flight Center. After training them in physical exercises, swimming and yoga, the team was set for the Gaganyaan mission.

Systems developed as a result of extensive field and laboratory research over the past five years are becoming a reality through Gaganyaan. We will make history after sending an Indian to space by 2025. Today is the first step for it.

India's journey into space exploration began with the launch of an American-made 'Nike-Apache' sounding rocket from Thumba on November 21 in 1963 at 6.25 pm. America and Russia were then trying to land a man on moon. Soon a Russian walked into space. American landed on the moon. China made its own rockets, but India's first rocket launch was in 1968 through SLV-3. Then after twelve years in 1980, India put our satellite into orbit using its own launch vehicle.

India's efforts to send humans into space and the story of progress towards it is amazing. The sky trials of Gaganyaan is a beginning. Along with that, the major leap of Indian space economy! When an Indian reaches space, there are two benefits. India is proving its scientific and technological capabilities globally and secondly, the change it will bring to the global space economy. The benefit for India is beyond imagination. The space projects which are currently being conducted along with the Gaganyaan experiment have this goal in mind.

Gaganyaan is India's first manned space mission. The aim is to make it a reality in 2025. The spacecraft will be placed in an orbit 400 km above the earth. With the implementation of this, India will become the fourth country after America, Russia and China to send a man into space.
