Technical varsity: Six syndicate members face disqualification threat

president

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the president not approving the university law amendment bill passed by the legislature, six syndicate members including former MP PK Biju will have to exit their post from the technical university.

Apart from Biju, CPM district committee member I.Saju, Kerala University teacher Dr B S Jamuna Engineering College teachers Vinod Kumar Jacob, G. Sanjeev and S. Vinod Mohan stand the chance of getting disqualified. Since they were nominated, it will be the duty of the government to disqualify them.

Normally in technical varsity only engineering and technology experts are included as syndicate members. Just before the last assembly elections, the current members were nominated to the syndicate by amending the law through an ordinance issued on 20 February 2021. This Ordinance was re-promulgated on 2nd July and 24th August.

In October 2021, the legislature passed a bill to replace the ordinance. But the governor refused to sign it and sent the bill to the President. When there was a case in the High Court that the nomination of 6 syndicate members was invalid from November 14, 2021, the government argued that the bill was under the consideration of the President and advocated that all of them could continue with retrospective effect.
